  1.                       CH 1 − INTRODUCTION TO POWERBASE
  2.                       ================================
  3. 1.1  Description and installation
  4. =================================
  5. Powerbase is a flat-file database management system for use with Acorn
  6. 32-bit RISC computers. Versions from 6.70 on, to which this manual apply,
  7. are only usable with RISC OS 3.1 or later.  If you are using RISC OS 2 you
  8. will require a different version of Powerbase which has a version number of
  9. the type 5.xx.  Many of the features described in the manual are not present
  10. in the earlier version of Powerbase but a suitable manual is available on
  11. request.

  13. 1.1.1 Hardware requirements
  14. ---------------------------
  15. It is quite feasible to use Powerbase on a 1Mb machine with a single floppy
  16. disc drive and, if your database runs to only a few hundred short records
  17. (e.g. an address-book), you might find such a system quite adequate for your
  18. needs.  You will, however, find list generation rather slow when working
  19. from a floppy disc and a hard disc is strongly recommended, even for a small
  20. database; for large databases it is essential.  If you have to work from
  21. floppies try to allocate enough memory to the RAM disc to copy the whole
  22. database onto it before you start work. This will speed up searches and
  23. list-generation enormously.

  25. 1.1.2 Installation
  26. ------------------
  27. To install Powerbase on your hard disc simply drag the !Powerbase
  28. application from the distribution disc to a suitable directory window. It is
  29. suggested that you also copy the sample databases e.g. !Elements, !Boxes,
  30. !Friends if you intend to experiment with them or work through either of the
  31. tutorials.  These are provided in a separate booklet. If databases are
  32. completely new to you you are advised to work thought the Quick Tutorial
  33. which is based on the simple address-book database !Friends.  If you are
  34. somewhat more experienced but are using Powerbase for the first time you
  35. will probably find Tutorial, using the !Elements database, more appropriate.

  52. 1.2  Starting and ending a work session
  53. =======================================
  54. 1.2.1 Loading Powerbase
  55. -----------------------
  56. Double-clicking on the Powerbase icon in a directory window causes the
  57. program to load and place its icon on the icon-bar.  The words “No data”
  58. will be displayed under the icon.
  59.  
  60. 1.2.2 Opening a database
  61. ------------------------
  62. A database may be opened for use by either of the following methods:−
  63.  
  64. •       Dragging the database icon onto the Powerbase icon on the icon-bar.
  65.  
  66. •       Double-clicking on the database icon.  This is the more usual method
  67.         and may be used even if Powerbase is not already loaded, as long as
  68.         it has been “seen” by the filer.
  69.  
  70. Whether you get immediate access to the database depends on whether or not
  71. it is password protected.  If no passwords have been defined (as is the case
  72. with all the sample databases on the distribution disc) the main data window
  73. will open and the name of the database will appear under the Powerbase icon.
  74.  
  75. A password-protected database will display a small window in the middle of
  76. the screen requesting you to enter a password and perhaps even a personal
  77. user I.D. as well.  The window has an Open button which should be clicked
  78. with SELECT when you have entered the required information.  There is also a
  79. Cancel button which removes the window from the screen without further
  80. action.

  82. 1.2.3 Closing a database
  83. ------------------------
  84. There are four ways of closing a database:−
  85.  
  86. •       Open another database, either by double-clicking or dragging to the
  87.         Powerbase icon.
  88.  
  89. •       Choose Quit from Powerbase's icon-bar menu. This also quits
  90.         Powerbase itself.
  91.  
  92. •       Choose Close database from the icon-bar menu.  This still leaves the
  93.         Powerbase application running.  The wording underneath reverts to
  94.         “No data”.
  95.  
  96. If you have made any change to the database while it was open the disc will
  97. be automatically updated so that your changes are not lost, regardless of
  98. which of the above three methods of closure is used.*

  100. 1.2.4 Quitting Powerbase
  101. ------------------------
  102. Choose Quit from the icon-bar menu.

  104. 1.3  Obtaining help
  105. ===================
  106. 1.3.1 Using the Acorn !Help application
  107. ---------------------------------------
  108. When you are first becoming acquainted with Powerbase you may find it useful
  109. to load Acorn’s !Help application (from Apps on the icon-bar). Resize the
  110. help window, if you wish, and move it to some convenient place on the
  111. screen. Moving the mouse pointer over the various windows and icons
  112. displayed by Powerbase will then give a brief description of the purpose of
  113. each.

  115. 1.3.2 Using the Helpreader text
  116. -------------------------------
  117. Further help is available from the Help option which appears on both the
  118. main menu and the icon-bar menu of Powerbase. Choosing this option displays
  119. a text file which you can “navigate” by means of small orange buttons
  120. included in the text. Clicking with SELECT on such a button takes you
  121. directly to the part of the text referred to. Double-clicking with ADJUST
  122. takes you back to where you were when you last clicked on a button. Clicking
  123. MENU over the text window displays a menu giving an alternative means of
  124. access to specific parts of the text. The text has deliberately been kept
  125. fairly short and is in no way a substitute for this manual; it is intended
  126. to provide basic information only.
